The mandate of the Centre is to carry out basic, clinical as well as operational research on dominant diseases, suggest intervention methods for reducing disease burden. It is proposed to work on few diseases as immediate priority. These are; Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), HIV and multi drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, vector borne diseases like JE, Dengue, and filariasis. Juvenile diabetes and myocarditis are diseases with probable infectious aetiologies. In addition, research to improve the child and maternal health is also a priority area of centre. Moreover, strengthen the scientific and technical expertise of state as well as local health agencies.
