The ICMR Computational Genomics Centre is a genomics service facility based at the ICMR, New Delhi.

RMRC, Gorakhpur is one of the 28 Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of Government of India. Initially, in order to understand the problem of persistent acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in eastern Uttar Pradesh, a Field Unit of ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune was established in Gorakhpur in 2008. Since, health indicators of North East region of Uttar Pradesh comprising of 14 districts are prominently poor in comparison to average health indicators of Uttar Pradesh and much lower than the all India figures. Therefore, due to absence of any single biomedical research Institute in this region, Government of India decided to upgrade Field Unit of NIV at Gorakhpur to full fledge independent Regional Medical Research Centre in 12 th Five Year Plan. The foundation stone of the centre was laid by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath and by the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India Shri. Jagat Prasad Nadda on 2nd September 2018.

Since, its foundation the RMRC initiated to establish a model human health research facility in this region to tackle local and regional health problems keeping focus on the marginalized, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged sections of society. RMRC will also act as a catalyst to improve the research status and capacity building in this region. In addition, RMRC also provides the diagnostic services, training to different categories of staff working in the health systems and working on etiological causes of AES. Moreover, RMRC is also planning to undertake studies on various communicable and non-communicable diseases are prevalent in this region. Some of the major public health important diseases in this region are AES, vector borne diseases, Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Tuberculosis, multidrug resistance strains, cervical and oral cancer, filariasis, diabetes, hepatitis to name a few beside nutritional deficiency disorders.

RMRC is also going to start to disseminate information on prevention demonstration projects in which public participation will be undertaken at the grass root level. This will be augmented by developing health informatics and its use by all stake holders, FAQs for common man and specialized health workers. Research on development and standardization of diagnostic tools at immunological and molecular level are also started by RMRC. Besides these, RMRC is also having a strong linkage with Medical College which provides a backbone of patient and help in systematic approach towards extent and variability in clinical presentation. RMRC would provide collaborative studies with ICMR institutes and other scientific organizations within the frame work of the Centre.
